Just One Thing: no canned food for one week!

Robyn O'Brien

Before turning ”green,” Robyn O’Brien, author of The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It, recalls standing in her kitchen one night in a moment of horror.

“I looked around at everything I feed my kids, and all the products, and realized how toxic everything was from the food to the cleaning supplies,” O’Brien told a group at the Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim recently. “I really didn’t know where to start.”

O’Brien could no longer cover her eyes, but was too overwhelmed to look. So what did she do?

“I knew I could do one thing,” she said. “Everyone can do one thing.”

O’Brien emphasized that many women feel terrible when they discover something they’ve been providing to their family is potentially dangerous.

We support O’Brien’s concept of JUST ONE THING, especially in the wake of fears around nuclear radiation, and existing news about toxins in our food, products and environments,

cansWe’d like to suggest “Just One Thing” this week, a simple change you can make to reduce your chemical exposure. We are borrowing a suggestion from TheChemicalFreeSkinny.

Just One Thing Tip: Try this week, purchasing NO CANNED FOOD, or only cans labeled BPA-free. Buy fresh or frozen vegetables/fruits, make homemade soups and purchase dried beans and grains (readily available at health food stores.)

The vast majority of cans include the chemical bisphenol-A (BPA), linked to endocrine problems, cancer, immune disorders and obesity. Food purchased in cans is cooked in those cans at very high heats, increasing the chance for the chemicals to move into the food.

The bad news out there is overwhelming, but we can all do Just One Thing! Please take a moment and tell us what you will do/or are doing this week?
